How to Play
13 Card Rummy Rules: Complete Guide With Examples
YonoPlayz Team · Published 19 Oct 2026 · Updated 19 Oct 2026
Quick answer: In 13 card rummy, each player gets 13 cards and must arrange them into sequences and sets. A valid hand needs at least two sequences, one of which is pure (no joker). Players draw and discard in turns, and the first to make a valid declaration wins. Losers score the points of their unmatched cards, up to 80.
Players and Decks
| Players | Decks | Printed jokers |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 | 1 |
| 3–6 | 2 | 2 |
Rule 1: Dealing
Players draw cards to decide the dealer; the lowest card usually deals. The dealer shuffles and gives 13 cards to each player, one at a time. The rest form the closed deck. The top card is placed face up as the first card of the open pile, and one card is drawn as the wild joker.
Rule 2: Jokers
There are two kinds of jokers. Printed jokers are the picture cards included in the deck. Wild jokers are all cards matching the rank of the randomly chosen joker card. If the 7♦ is drawn, every 7 in every suit is a joker. Both kinds can replace any card in an impure sequence or set. If the picked card is a printed joker, aces usually become the wild jokers.
Rule 3: Valid Groups
- Pure sequence: 3+ consecutive cards, same suit, no joker — 4♣ 5♣ 6♣. A wild joker used in its natural place still counts as pure, for example 6♦ 7♦ 8♦ when 7s are wild.
- Impure sequence: 3+ consecutive same-suit cards with a joker filling a gap — 9♥ Joker J♥.
- Set: 3 or 4 cards of one rank, different suits — K♠ K♥ K♦. Jokers can complete a set.
Rule 4: The Two-Sequence Requirement
This is the most important rule. A declaration is valid only with two or more sequences, including at least one pure sequence. All other cards must sit in valid sequences or sets. A hand with four perfect sets but no sequence is invalid.
Rule 5: Turns
Play moves clockwise. On each turn you must pick one card, from the closed deck or the top of the open pile, then discard one card to the open pile. You cannot pick a joker from the open pile in most formats unless you are starting the game.
Rule 6: Dropping
You may leave a deal by dropping. A first drop, before your first draw, costs 20 points. A middle drop, at any later point, costs 40 points. Dropping saves you from an 80-point loss on a bad hand.
Rule 7: Declaring
When your hand is complete, draw your 14th card, place one card in the finish slot, and show your groups. Other players then group their cards so their points can be counted.
Rule 8: Wrong Show
If your declaration is invalid, for example missing a pure sequence, you take a penalty of 80 points and the game continues for others or ends, depending on the format.
Rule 9: Scoring
| Situation | Points |
|---|---|
| Valid declaration | 0 |
| Losing with pure + second sequence | Only unmatched cards count |
| Losing without two sequences | All cards count |
| Maximum loss per deal | 80 |
| First drop / Middle drop | 20 / 40 |
Variants Using These Rules
Points, pool and deals rummy all use these core 13 card rules. They differ only in how scores carry across deals. Points rummy settles after one deal, pool rummy eliminates players at 101 or 201 points, and deals rummy is played over a fixed number of deals.
