How to Play Rummy: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

YonoPlayz Team · Published 19 Oct 2026 · Updated 19 Oct 2026

Quick answer: To play rummy, each player gets 13 cards and takes turns drawing one card and discarding one. The aim is to arrange all 13 cards into valid sequences and sets, including at least two sequences, one of which must be pure. The first player to do this correctly and declare wins the round.

What You Need

Indian rummy uses one or two standard 52-card decks plus printed jokers. Two players usually use one deck; three to six players use two decks. You also need a way to keep score, since rummy is often played over several deals.

Card Ranks and Values

CardsPoints
Ace, King, Queen, Jack10 each
2 to 10Face value
Jokers (printed and wild)0

The ace can be used high (Q-K-A) or low (A-2-3) in a sequence, but not wrapped around (K-A-2).

Step 1: The Deal

The dealer shuffles and gives 13 cards to each player. The remaining cards form the closed deck, placed face down. The top card is turned face up to start the open pile. Another card is picked at random as the wild joker. Every card of that rank, in any suit, becomes a joker for the round.

Step 2: Understand Sequences and Sets

  • Pure sequence: three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, with no joker. Example: 5♥ 6♥ 7♥.
  • Impure sequence: consecutive cards of the same suit using a joker in place of a missing card. Example: 8♠ 9♠ Joker.
  • Set: three or four cards of the same rank in different suits. Example: Q♣ Q♦ Q♠.

Your hand is valid only with at least two sequences, one of them pure. Remaining cards can be in sets or more sequences.

Step 3: Draw and Discard

On your turn, pick one card from either the closed deck or the open pile. Then discard one card face up onto the open pile. You always hold 13 cards at the end of a turn. Choose discards carefully: high cards you cannot use add points if you lose, while cards your opponent picks up tell you what they are collecting.

Step 4: Group Your Cards

Arrange your hand into groups as you play. Build the pure sequence first, because without it your hand counts as fully unmelded if someone else declares. Then use jokers to complete impure sequences and sets.

Step 5: Declare

When all 13 cards form valid groups, draw your 14th card, discard one to the "finish" slot, and show your hand. If the declaration is valid, you win the round. An invalid declaration carries a penalty, usually 80 points, so double-check your groups first.

Step 6: Scoring the Round

The winner scores zero. Other players add up the points of cards not in valid groups. If a player has no pure sequence, all their cards count. The maximum count is 80 points. Read our full guide to rummy points calculation for examples.

Dropping Out

If your hand looks weak, you can drop. A first drop before drawing costs 20 points; a middle drop costs 40. Learn the timing in our guide to rummy drop rules.

Beginner Tips

  • Make a pure sequence your first goal every deal.
  • Discard high unconnected cards early to cut your risk.
  • Watch what opponents pick and avoid feeding them.
  • Use jokers on long sequences or sets, never in a pure sequence.
