Teen Patti Hand Rankings Explained with Probabilities

YonoPlayz Team · Updated

Teen Patti is played with three cards from a standard 52-card deck, so there are exactly 22,100 possible hands (52 choose 3). Every probability below comes from counting how many of those hands make each ranking. These are exact numbers, not estimates.

How each number is calculated

  • Trail: 13 ranks × 4 ways to choose 3 of the 4 suits = 52.
  • Pure Sequence: there are 12 valid runs (A-2-3 up to Q-K-A) × 4 suits = 48. K-A-2 is not a sequence.
  • Sequence: 12 runs × 64 suit combinations (4 × 4 × 4), minus the 4 that are all one suit = 12 × 60 = 720.
  • Color: 4 suits × (286 ways to pick 3 ranks − 12 that are runs) = 4 × 274 = 1,096.
  • Pair: 13 ranks × 6 ways to pick 2 suits × 48 possible third cards = 3,744.
  • High Card: everything else: 22,100 − 5,660 = 16,440.

The Trail paradox

A Pure Sequence (48 ways) is actually rarer than a Trail (52 ways), yet Trail ranks higher. Pure probability would put the Pure Sequence on top, but the traditional order has stuck. A few house variants swap them, so check the rules before you play.

Breaking ties

  • Trail: the higher rank wins. A-A-A beats K-K-K.
  • Sequences: A-K-Q is the highest run. Most rules treat A-2-3 as the second highest, and some treat it as the lowest, so check your table.
  • Color and High Card: compare the highest card, then the second, then the third.
  • Pair: compare the pair first, then the odd card.
  • Suits do not rank in standard rules, so identical hands split the pot.

What the odds mean at the table

Three hands in four are High Card hands. A pair is already better than about 74% of starting hands, and a Color or better beats over 91% of them. That is why "blind" play and bluffing matter so much in Teen Patti: most of the time, nobody has much.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best hand in Teen Patti?

A Trail (three of a kind) is the best hand, and three Aces is the best Trail. You will be dealt a Trail about once in every 425 hands.

Is a Pure Sequence rarer than a Trail?

Yes. There are 48 possible Pure Sequences but 52 possible Trails, so a Pure Sequence is slightly rarer. Trail still ranks higher by tradition.

What are the chances of getting a pair in Teen Patti?

About 16.9%, or roughly one hand in six. There are 3,744 ways to make a pair out of 22,100 possible hands.
